角膜外来では、個々の患者さんにもっとも適した手術法を相談しながら決めています。角膜移植の件数は年間100件を越えておりますが、今後はさらに多くの症例に対応できるように整備をしていく予定です。特に最近力を入れているのは、角膜の障害された部位のみを取り替える、パーツ移植の開発です。多くの場合は、角膜の一部が障害されることで視力が低下しているため、最近は角膜上皮移植、深層表層角膜移植、角膜内皮移植などの移植が行われるようになりました。さらには、角膜移植後の視機能にもこだわりを持ちながら、新しい工夫を取り入れていく予定です。

The cornea group at Keio University is devoted to the treatment of various corneal diseases by minimally invasive procedures. The number of keratoplasty cases exceeds 100 a year, and we plan to accommodate more patients requiring surgery. We have adapted several new techniques to transplant and replace only those corneal components that are actually damaged. Penetrating keratoplasty has long been the standard for corneal transplantation. However, transplanting excessive tissue may not only be unnecessary, but also increase the risk of immunological rejection. Extensive surgery also affects post-surgical vision. Many of our recent cases are treated by deep lamellar keratoplasty or endothelial keratoplasty depending upon the affected corneal layer. We choose the ideal choice of surgery by discussing the various options with each patient. We will continue to improve current techniques to achieve higher quality of vision.
